Instagram tries an incognito mode with messages that disappear

It’s been a long time since Instagram went from being a simple photo sharing application to a communication application in its Instagram Direct section. What’s new in Instagram messaging is the private conversations.

Jane Manchunwhich specializes in gutting applications in search of upcoming features, has found in Instagram a kind of secret chats with ephemeral messages. It’s still very green, although it might come later as a way of saying something off-the-record.

The 🙊 mode

This incognito mode or secret chats are currently called “🙊 mode”, because it seems to be set up as a change to private conversation to say something that you don’t want on the record. Remember that Instagram is cloud-based, and while it’s possible to delete messages and there’s no time limit, doing it manually can take time in a long conversation.

This is a very green version for now, but it could work as follows. In a normal Instagram messaging conversation, you could switch to this more private mode at any time. Anything you say in this mode will be deleted when you leave it.

From Instagram have confirmed to be working on this novelty, which they consider to be “at a very early stage of development”. There is therefore no estimated date about when the messages that disappear on Instagram might arrive, or if they will end up arriving, as the experiment might also stay on the road.
