For the past 13 years, the iPhone has been evolving to adopt some key features that – in some models – have defined not only the generation, but also the next. With the new iPhone 12, Apple is finally adding 5G connectivity to all models in its new range.
The arrival of the 5G also changes the design of the iPhone, for a familiar but evolved one
Once again, the process by which the company has maintained cauta when adding it to their smartphones. Looking back, the first iPhone came on the market with EDGE connectivity (similar to the 2G equivalent). Without a doubt, it was a different world: the Internet at that time was little more than a shadow of today’s world, with few utilities and applications that accessed the Internet for practically little more than reading e-mail and consulting a website.

The new design of the iPhone 12 is also due to a change in how the antennas and all their new technology should be positioned inside the device’s case: something that the company explained in the keynote itself and that gives rise to a new generation that in appearance already marks a distance with what we knew until now. iPhone 12, a remembered but very up-to-date design

Something we’ve lost with the online keynote is the first physical contact after the presentation: that first feeling after seeing the computer-created images on a screen and feeling how it looks in reality. The New iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro win big liveThe design makes us feel a certain familiarity but with many steps forward. It is more similar to the ideas of the iPhone 5 than to those of the iPhone 4 in terms of visual language: straighter lines with smooth and flat edges, giving a very uniform and definitely robust construction feeling.
It’s lighter compared to the thinner, lower-volume iPhone 12 and still has the same 6.1″ screen. The reduction in frames is not radical compared to the previous generation but it is at that point where you can tell at a glanceThe fact that the sides are now flat helps a lot, which supports the feeling of reduction.
When in hand, the grip improves with the new straight-edge design and gives more holding consistency. It also gives the feeling of improved safety due to the reduction in volume that I mentioned earlier: the same size of screen 6.1″ but less wingspan to hold it. Even being used to the rounded edges of iPhone 11, these iPhone 12 are quite comfortable and do not bother despite their angles as they are also somewhat thinner.
The new design is also leveraged in new colors, personally a range of which I like the most in recent years: very pastel colors led by two blues that feel great to this new generation, especially the peaceful blue of the iPhone 12 Pro. In the test unit that we received, even the well-known silver color – so common in other generations – suits the high range very well with the flat stainless steel edges.
Ceramic Shield is a new material developed in partnership with Corning to improve screen strength
Apple points out that the screen has a new material that makes it much stronger, called Ceramic Shield. When touched, there is no difference in performance or difference from previous screens in terms of polish, touch or compactness: it still looks as robust as ever. With the next few days of use, I’ll write down what changes there are and how withstands the screen on a daily basis – for the next detailed analysis. What I have noticed is that finally this glass of the screen is completely flat (without the rounded edges that accompanied last year’s design), which also gives a feeling similar to that which would be produced by a greater lamination between screen and finger. In other words, there is not so much a feeling that the screen is under a glass, but that it is an integral part of it.
The first impression when you see it coming out of the box is that it’s familiarity that reminds us of design, a modern update that differentiates it from what we knew – and that fits both models perfectly. It is more striking than it seems, even on the table: I warn you that these The new iPhone 12 will not go unnoticed even though in the pictures it seems there’s little difference.
Super Retina XDR standard on all iPhone 12

Without a doubt, one of the most striking changes is the incorporation of the spectacular Super Retina XDR display to the entire iPhone 12 range (the four models). Of the two that we have right now in front of us, the difference is tremendous, especially when comparing the iPhone 12 with the previous generation iPhone 11: this year’s model keeps the inches but passes from Liquid Retina HD to Super Retina XDRThe company is now moving from Apple’s enhanced IPS technology to the brand’s new OLED.
It is also an HDR compatible display that supports a maximum brightness of 1200nits in this mode (Compared to the unique 625 iPhone 11 that also supports the new models in “non-HDR” mode, the Pro even improves this base number to 800). It goes to a resolution of 2532×1170 pixels compared to 1792×828 on iPhone 11, and a dot per inch density ranging from last year’s 326 dpi to 460 dpi on iPhone 12.
All of this can be seen in the greater definition and depth of black tones much more pure in images and videoswith much greater contrast between color variations. AppleTV+ HDR content, for example, looks great on any display and marks the beginning of the next generation of iPhone that leaves behind the LED panels.
Whether you use your iPhone to surf the Internet or to read occasionally with any reading app, the definition of characters and the images will look much more defined. In the case of the Pro, in direct light it is even more visible because of the 800 nits base of this model that gives a brighter screen useful for high light conditions.
Chip A14 bionic, the real star
I don’t remember as much excitement with a new Apple chip as I did this year. It’s certainly motivated by the company’s announcement to move from Intel processors to ARM and the arrival of their Apple Silicon. The first landing of this new generation is commanded by the new A14 Bionic that incorporates this iPhone 12 (all models in the range) and promises to be the heart of everything improving on what we knew from the A13 Bionic.
The new processor significantly improves your processing cores for Machine Learningreaching no less than 16 cores. This increase in the new chip is based on the company’s decision to leverage the processing of the learning machines on the device – and not to let external servers hold and process that user data. All this should translate into an improvement in the pictures we take, the Dolby Vision recording capability which we are testing thoroughly for the final analysis (something that was only available on professional cameras, until now) and a clear improvement in energy efficiency. We will talk about all this in detail in the analysis that we will offer you later, but I did not want to miss the opportunity without reviewing what the new iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro offer us on Geekbench, to get an idea of the difference with their predecessors:
This new chip, manufactured for the first time in 5nm (that is, more efficient and faster) allows iPhone to also incorporate a new image signal processor that enhances photos of the Smart HDRThe newest version of the system, which eliminates noise and boosts night mode. This new HDR takes the processor the task of “understanding” the image and enhancing each of its elements, differentiating them and highlighting their unique characteristics: a person, a tree, a landscape… In the first tests that I have been able to do, the photos are indeed of very good quality, but we have to do even more tests and in different conditions. A great change that must certainly be tested in this generation – and that is available to both the iPhone 12 as for the iPhone 12 Pro is the new night mode, which is now finally available with both the wide-angle and ultra-wide-angle, in addition to the front camera – which even records in Dolby Vision! – In twilight, more light seems to be collected than in previous generations.
Important that this night mode also comes in this generation to the video again supported by the A14 Bionic, the learning engine supported by 16 cores and the new signal processorThe same is true for night video shooting (It even works on time-lapse, perfect for nighttime city shots, for example.).
A real new generation
No doubt this iPhone 12 needs to be checked very thoroughlybut I didn’t want to miss the opportunity to share this first contact with you. There’s so much more to tell you. Surprisingly level of technology achieved by this new iPhone 12: the distribution of the new 5G antennas (that we’ll try at different points to measure their speeds) result in an update of a known design that in hand, looks much better than we can imagine seeing only images. The new colours help with this and the construction is more solid and at first sight more protected, too.

At the technology level, we cannot ignore the step forward that means the arrival of the A14 and all that it implies in improvements in image and video, passing by the enlarged reality of the LiDAR scanner that promises also to improve the photos that we take with the devices. All this, we are reviewing it in detail for the final analysis after testing it as this device deserves in detail.
