Is it worth buying an iPhone 11 or an iPhone 12? We compare them

The current generation of Apple smartphones, the iPhone 12, is the largest to date. It consists of four different models that vary in screen size, power and photographic section. The recommended retail price starts at 809 euros, the iPhone 12 mini being the cheapest.

With each new generation one of the previous ones is usually discontinued, but in this case it has only been the iPhone 11 Pro models, still being able to acquire of official way the iPhone 11 “to dry”, which was the most modest and accessible terminal of those presented in September 2019. And as is logical, in addition, its price has decreased to be presented as a more affordable and attractive proposal.

The iPhone 12 is a natural evolution of its predecessor: it has a more powerful processor, it has been slightly redesigned with straighter lines and the long-awaited OLED panel has finally been implemented throughout the range and not only in the Pro models. But there is not that much difference compared to the iPhone 11. If you are thinking of renewing your smartphone and you are clear that it will be from Apple, you may be hesitating between these two models. And with this post we are going to compare these iPhones to try to clarify the doubts of the users.

The first difference: the screen

Iphone 12

The first point to compare the iPhone is the screen. Both the iPhone 11 and iPhone 12 have the same screen size, 6.1 inches. However, the difference is in panel technology. The first has an IPS LCD panel, and the second an OLED panel. OLED technology provides higher image quality by enabling purer blacks and vivid colors. In addition, it supports HDR Dolby Vision, which is a plus point for consuming multimedia content.

Panel resolution also changes: 828 x 1,792 pixels (iPhone 11) vs 1,170 x 2,532 pixels (iPhone 12). This translates into greater sharpness and the number of pixels per inch. However, it is a difference that can be seen if you have both terminals next to each other, but looking at them separately can go quite unnoticed by the average user. The panel of the iPhone 11, even though it is IPS LCD, has a fairly good image quality.

The viewing experience with both terminals is optimal, but on the iPhone 12 it is better. If it is going to be used to watch a lot of videos, it is a point to consider because it will appreciate more resolution and support for high dynamic range, which can be enjoyed on many streaming video platforms such as Netflix, Prime Video or Disney +.

The second difference: the design

Iphone 11

Apple devices are moving from more rounded edges to straight lines, thus returning in a way to the origins. It was clearly seen for the first time with the third generation of iPad Pro, then with the iPhone 12 and now with the new iMac with M1 chip. In the case of electronic equipment such as computers it can be a simple aesthetic decision, but in smartphones and tablets it can have other benefits, such as a better grip feeling in the hand.

As well as being slightly thinner (7.4mm vs. 8.3mm) and light (164 grams vs. 194 grams), there are users who find the iPhone 12 more comfortable and “easy to hold” because of the more pronounced edges. However, the exterior design will not be so important if a cover is to be placed that camouflages it (with a transparent silicone one would still be appreciable).

Another point to compare in these iPhone, although it is not exaggerated, is that iPhone 12 screen edges are narrower than iPhone 11. The reason is in the technology of the screen. However, being black, it does not attract negative attention in the case of the predecessor without active attention to detail.

The third difference: the power of the processor and software

The most obvious evolution between devices is power. It is logical that the iPhone 12 is more powerful than the iPhone 11. The new terminal has the Apple A14 Bionic processor, while the predecessor integrates the Apple A13 Bionic. The RAM remains the same in both models: 4 GB. Obviously, there may be apps that benefit from the new chip, but that does not mean that the iPhone 11 is going to fall short any time soon, far from it.

Where else it can be noticed is in the most demanding video games, or apps aimed at the professional field. A normal user who uses his smartphone for instant messaging, social networks, photo and video editing for Instagram, that is, for the classic, will not have problems in years. It is more likely that it will change before mobile phone than that the iPhone 11 does not have compatibility with the most popular software. And this gives for the next question …

The software. The iPhone 11 and iPhone 12 are compatible with iOS 14, the most recent version of the operating system for mobile devices of the bitten apple, and they will also be compatible with iOS 15, the next big update that will be seen for the first time, if all goes as planned, at WWDC 2021.

It is difficult to know how many versions of iOS can be installed on the iPhone 11 and iPhone 12, but we can get a more or less approximate idea. The iPhone 6s is the oldest smartphone to be compatible with iOS 14, and it was released in 2015 with iOS 9. That’s six versions, six years of official support. It is likely not compatible with iOS 15, but It is not unreasonable to venture that the iPhone 11 will have at least six years of updates . The iPhone 12 may have an additional one for being more recent, but only the future will tell.

The fourth difference? The cameras

Iphone 12 02

In the photographic section there are no major changes between the iPhone 11 and the iPhone 12. If you have to review something to make a difference, it could be the support for Video recording in 4K HDR Dolby Vision on the latest smartphone from Californians. However, although it improves in certain scenarios, it is not a decisive point when buying one or the other unless it is to be used often for work or hobbies.

Otherwise, they are practically the same in this regard.: both have two 12 MP rear cameras with wide-angle and ultra-wide angle sensors, as well as a 12 MP TrueDepth front that integrates the Face ID facial recognition-based security system. Only the iPhone 12 Pro has very interesting changes in this aspect, and it is because of the LiDAR sensor for depth and augmented reality.

The fifth difference: the price

Iphone Price

This is one of the compelling reasons in the comparison to definitely choose between the iPhone 11 or the iPhone 12. There is a clear price difference of several hundred euros. If we stick to the recommended retail price that Apple marks in its official store and the rest of authorized suppliers, the iPhone 11 starts at 689 euros and the iPhone 12 starts at 909 euros, both with 64GB of internal storage.

However, can be found much cheaper. Even the iPhone 12, being the most recent, can be purchased with good discounts on Amazon, a platform known for having one of the best after-sales services and a two-year warranty. At this time of the year, I would recommend searching a bit to find them with an interesting offer and not opting for the Apple Store in the first place (which is fine for reserving new products, but the devices do not drop in price even though they have been selling for months. ).

We started with the iPhone 11. The cheapest version is the one with 64 GB of internal storage, which can be scarce if you tend to store a lot of photos, videos and install a lot of apps and video games. In TuImeiLibre it can be purchased for 579 euros, which is a saving of 110 euros compared to its RRP in the Apple Store. The store ships brand-new Spanish pipeline products with a two-year warranty.

For his part, iPhone 12 It also has a very striking sale in TuImeiLibre. All storage capacities are on sale, and the 64GB version is available for 909 euros 699 euros. It is a 22% discount with which we can save neither more nor less than 210 euros.

iPhone 11 or iPhone 12, which one do I prefer?

As we have commented in the previous point, the most decisive factor is the price. If you find a very good offer and the difference between both smartphones is just 100 eurosTake advantage and get hold of the iPhone 12. If you choose to buy it in the Apple Store, the situation changes, because the difference in the disbursement is 220 euros.

The iPhone 12 Pro after a month of use: reaching the peak of fullness

Anyway, whoever you choose, either one will fight for a while. Both are powerful, have good cameras and relatively recent designs. If you are going to watch a lot of movies and series, the iPhone 12 may provide a better experience because it is OLED and has Dolby Vision compatibility. Otherwise, the iPhone 11 is also a safe bet for the future.
